Politics and current affairs

On 14 February 2021, Albin Kurti’s left-wing nationalist Self-determination Movement gained 50.28% of the vote, with 58 seats out of 120. Kurti was elected as prime minister on 22 March 2021, following an agreement signed with smaller parties such as Serb List.

Geography.
Kosovo is bordered by Serbia to the north, Montenegro to the west, Albania to the south-west and the Republic of North Macedonia to the south. The country is mountainous with a continental climate.

Government

Even when it was part of Yugoslavia, and then with the special status accorded to it within Serbia, Kosovo has always been an area of tensions due to the presence of a large Albanian community and the fact that here is where many places important to Serbian history are found. During the Yugoslavian crisis there was guerrilla warfare led by the Albanian independence movement UCK. After NATO military intervention in 1999, the region was placed under UN (UNMIK) administration. The Serb population has largely fled the country and control within the country rests with the Albanian community. The Serb minority live in small enclaves protected by the international troops. On 17 February 2008 Kosovo declared its independence, gaining the support of many states, including the USA.
On 22 July, 2010, the International Court of Justice declared that the proclamation of independence of Kosovo does not break international law, but Serbia continues not to recognise the secession. In September 2010, the UN General Assembly passed a resolution calling for the involvement of the EU in facilitating the dialogue between Serbia and Kosovo. There is also an EU civil mission (EULEX). On 19 April 2013, an agreement was signed with Serbia, which is expected to lead to normalized relations: after two years of stalemate, the negotiations restarted in 2020.
Kosovo is a parliamentary republic with an assembly of 120 members who serve for a four-year term.

Economy

There is a modest amount of agriculture and sheep farming; extraction activities (coal, which fuels two power plants plus one under construction by US giant General Electric, chromite, iron/nickel, lead and zinc), food production, metal-working and textiles. High unemployment fuels a widespread black-market economy. International aid and remittances from emigrants are fundamental.
