Politics and current affairs

While commercial and political tensions with Serbia continue, Prime Minister Ramush Haradinaj resigned on 19 July 2019 because he was summoned on suspicion of war crimes by the International Criminal Court in The Hague.

Geography.
Kosovo is bordered by Serbia to the north, Montenegro to the west, Albania to the south-west and the Republic of North Macedonia to the south. The country is mountainous with a continental climate.

Government

Even when it was part of Yugoslavia, and then with the special status accorded to it within Serbia, Kosovo has always been an area of tensions due to the presence of a large Albanian community and the fact that here is where many places important to Serbian history are found. During the Yugoslavian crisis there was guerrilla warfare led by the Albanian independence movement UCK.
After NATO military intervention in 1999, Serbian troops withdrew and the region was placed under UN (UNMIK) administration. The Serb population has largely fled the country and control within the country rests with the Albanian community. The Serb minority live in small enclaves protected by the international troops. On 17 February 2008 Kosovo declared its independence, gaining the support of many states in Western Europe and the USA, which set up an important military base (at Camp Bondsteel).
On 22 July, 2010, the International Court of Justice declared that the proclamation of independence of Kosovo does not break international law. Serbia continues not to recognise the secession of a territory that is the cradle of Serbian culture. In September 2010, the UN General Assembly passed a resolution calling for the involvement of the EU in facilitating the dialogue between Serbia and Kosovo. On 19 April 2013, an agreement was signed with Serbia, which is expected to lead to normalized relations. Kosovo is a parliamentary republic with an assembly of 120 members who serve for a four-year term. There is an EU civil mission (EULEX) which is aiming to help set up the legal system, a police force and border controls.

Economy

There is a modest amount of agriculture and sheep farming; extraction activities (coal, which fuels two power plants plus one under construction by US giant General Electric, chromite, iron/nickel, lead and zinc), food production, metal-working and textiles. High unemployment fuels a widespread black-market economy. International aid and remittances from emigrants are fundamental.
