Politics and current affairs

Saint-Martin has been an overseas collectivity of Metropolitan France since 2007, following the referendum of 2003 when the inhabitants chose to separate from Guadeloupe. It is administered by a Territorial Council (23 members) elected directly for a five-year term and is represented in Paris by one deputy (shared with Saint-Barthélemy) and one senator.

Geography.
The northern part of the island of the same name in the Lesser Antilles, 300 km north of Guadeloupe.
