The island has been a territorial collectivity of Metropolitan France since 2007, following the referendum of 2003 when the inhabitants chose to separate from Guadeloupe. It is administered by a Territorial Council (19 members) elected directly for a five-year term and is represented in Paris by one deputy (shared with Saint-Martin) and one senator.

An island of the Lesser Antilles, lying 24 km south of Saint-Martin and 230 km north of Guadeloupe.
