Politics and current affairs

Geography.
Guam is an island in Micronesia, in the western Pacific Ocean, the largest and southernmost of the Mariana Islands. The island is of volcanic origin, mountainous and is surrounded by coral reefs. It has a hot, fairly humid climate.

Guam was ceded to the USA by Spain in 1898. Since 1950, it has had the status of “Unincorporated territory” of the USA and is ruled by a Governor who is elected directly for four years. The Legislature has 15 members who are elected every two years. The territory sends one non-voting member to the US House of Representatives. Guam is a strategic air and naval base for the USA.
