Formerly a dependency of Jamaica, the country is now a British overseas territory with an autonomous government.

Geography.
The two coral island groups are situated in the Atlantic Ocean southeast of the Bahamas. The Turks Islands include Grand Turk, Salt Cay and numerous smaller islands. The Caicos Islands, six main islands and 16 smaller islands, lie off the southernmost tip of the Bahamas.
