An archipelago in the European polar area, on which tensions are growing between Norway and Russia due to the strategic importance of the region. The largest islands are: Spitsbergen (37 673 km²), Nordaustlandet (14 443 km²), Edgeøya (5073 km²), Barentsøya (1288 km²), Kvitøya (682 km²), Prins Karls Forland (615 km²), Kong Karls Land (342 km²), Bjørnøya (Bear Island, 178 km²) and Hopen (47 km²).

A colony of workers has come together on the islands, most of whom are Russians, to work in the coal mines and build scientific stations. The principle mines are at Longyearbyen and Barentsburg. There are also radio stations and research centres.
