Politics and current affairs

A coalition government (VHP-ABOP) came out of elections on 25 May 2020: on 13 July C. Santokhi was elected as leader, marking an end to the decade-long government of D. Bouterse.

Geography.
Suriname is bordered to the east by French Guiana, to the south by Brazil and to the west by Guyana. To the north lies the Atlantic Ocean.
The country has a large plain along the coast, created by the floodplains of the River Marowijne, the River Suriname, the River Saramacca, the River Coppename and the River Corantijn flowing down from the highlands in the centre of the country. The highlands are made up of long slopes culminating in the peak of Juliana Top (1230 m). Further to the south on the Brazilian border lie the Tumuk Humak mountains. The climate is warm and humid and rather insalubrious inland, but the north-easterly trade winds make the coastal strip more bearable.

Government

A former colony of the Netherlands (Dutch Guyana), Suriname has been independent since 26 November 1975.
With the 30 September 1987 Constitution, parliamentary democracy was re-established after seven years of dictatorship under Dési Bouterse, who returned to power between 2010 and 2020. The President of the Republic, who is also head of the government, is elected for a five-year term by Parliament (51 members elected for a five-year term).

Economy

The economy is dependent on the prices of the raw materials which are exported. The main crops are rice, sugar cane, bananas, citrus fruits and coconut palm. The forests are a rich resource, but are underexploited due to lack of investment. Among the most prized woods are the Manilkaria zapota, the Lecythis ollaria, the Copaifera bracteata and the Bombax ceiba (kapok). Fishing, especially for crustaceans, is of growing importance, mainly exported to the USA.
Suriname was one of the world’s largest producers of bauxite, but the exploitation of the deposits and the refining of aluminium were halted between 2015 and 2017. The main resources that are mined are gold (from floodplain deposits in Saramacca and Lawa) and oil (offshore deposits near Paramaribo, in the Saramacca district, connected via an oil pipeline to the refinery in Paramaribo). In addition to the mining activities, other important sectors include the timber industry (at Bruynzeel), and fish packing, rum distilling (at Nieuw Nickerie), and the production of cement (Paramaribo), beer and cigarettes. Tourism is also increasing.
