Government

A former British colony, it became self-governing in 1959 and in 1963 joined the Federation of Malaya. It became independent in 1965. The country is governed by the PAP (People’s Action Party) which has set up an authoritarian regime, at first led by the “founder of the nation” Lee Kuan Yew, then by his son Lee Hsien Loong. According to the 1959 Constitution, the President is elected by direct suffrage for six years, but has limited executive powers. The Prime Minister and the Government are accountable to the Parliament (89 members elected for five years, plus up to eighteen appointed members). The legal system is based on common law.

Economy

The economic structure of Singapore is well developed, based on services and well-made products. Dependent on exports, the country remains sensitive to variations in the market for high-level technological products.
Singapore is one of the world’s largest ports, particularly in terms of container traffic, though even this area experiences the effects of trends in international traffic.
The country is headquarters to hundreds of multinational corporations in advanced sectors. Industry is well developed, especially in the machinery and transport sectors (shipbuilding), chemicals, petrochemicals, electronics, pharmaceutical and biotechnology. In addition to trading, banks and financial institutions play a major role. Singapore is also an important centre for tourism and conferences in Asia.
