Geography.
An atoll in the Pacific Ocean, west of the Gilbert Islands, Nauru is a coral island, surrounded by a reef. It has 30 km of coastline and is the smallest island state in the world. It has an equatorial climate.

Government


A German colony since 1888, Nauru was administered by Australia from 1914 until its independence in 1968.
The Parliament (19 elected members for a 3-year term) appoints the President of the Republic.

Economy


Phosphate mining is the only relevant industrial activity; part of its revenues has been invested in unit trusts, however this is not sufficient to support the country’s finances.
Australian aid and the profits from the granting of fishing licences (tuna) are fundamental.
