Politics and current affairs

The elections in the autumn of 2018 will unfold against a backdrop of conflict between the pro-Russian president Igor Dodon and the government backed by pro-western forces. The flames were fanned by the government’s decision to recall the ambassador of Russia in December 2017 and by mass protests over the reunification with Romania in March 2018.

Geography.
Moldova is bordered by Ukraine to the north, east and south, and by Romania to the west. It is situated in the south-west corner of the East European Plain and extends from the valley of the River Prut in the west to the valley of the River Dniester (Nistru) in the north-east.

Government

Formerly a federal republic of the USSR, Moldova became independent on 27 August 1991. The region of Gagauzia, where the majority of the population is Turkish-speaking, has a high degree of autonomy. Transnistria (where the majority of the population is Russian) has effectively made itself independent on 1990. Based on the 1994 Constitution, amended in 2000, and the Constitutional Court’s decision in 2016 to re-establish direct voting for the head of State, the President of the Republic and Parliament (101 members) are directly elected by the citizens for a term of 4 years.
