Geography.
An island nation in the Indian Ocean east of Madagascar, Mauritius lies in the Mascarene Archipelago. The island of Rodrigues, the Agalega Islands and the Cargados Carajos Shoals all belong to Mauritius, which also lays claim to Tromelin Island and the Chagos Archipelago.

Government


Formerly a British colony, Mauritius became independent on 12 March 1968. According to the Constitution of 12 August 1967, it is a parliamentary republic. Executive power lies in the hands of the government which must be approved by the National Assembly (70 members who serve for five years, 62 of whom are elected and 8 of whom represent ethnic minorities). The National Assembly also elects the President of the Republic.

Economy


The main plantation crop is sugar cane. Tea and coconut palms are also grown as well as cereals, fruit and vegetables at a subsistence level. Local industry includes textile mills, sugar refineries that also produce electricity from biomass and a fertilizer factory at Port Louis, fish-processing plants. The creation of tax-free zones and fiscal incentives has encouraged the growth of financial services. Tourism is important to the economy.
