Geography.
A Micronesian archipelago in the Pacific Ocean, the Marshall Islands are part of the Ratak Chain (with 16 atolls) and the Ralik Chain (with 18 atolls).
The main atolls are Jaluit, Kwajalein, Enewetak and Bikini.

Government


From 1947 to 1990, the Marshall Islands were part of the UN Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands, ruled by the United States. The National Assembly has 33 members who are elected for four years. The USA continues to look after the islands’ foreign affairs and defence.

Economy


The main crop for export is coconut palm. Fishing licences issued to foreign (Chinese and Japanese) fishing-boats are an important source of income. Financial aid from the US is of key importance (they pay a rent for the military base on the Kwajalein atoll).
