Geography.

Government

Part of the British Empire from 1800, Malta became independent on 21 September 1964, and a republic on 13 December 1974. The two main political parties (the Nationalist Party and the Labour Party) have alternated in government. On 1 May 2004, Malta joined the EU. The House of Representatives is normally made up of 65 members elected for 5 years under the first-past-the-post system (the number of members can be increased in order to give the winning party a majority) and elects the President of the Republic.
