Politics and current affairs

The lack of transparency following the murder of journalist Daphne Galizia cast a pall over the rule of law, while tensions continue with Italy regarding migration.

Geography.
An archipelago in the southern central Mediterranean Sea, lying between Sicily and Tunisia. It comprises the islands of Malta, Gozo (Ghawdex), Comino (Kemmuna) and other minor islets. The landscape of the main island (Malta) is uneven, with a high, rugged coastline.

Government

Part of the British Empire from 1800, Malta became independent on 21 September 1964, and a republic on 13 December 1974. The two main political parties (the Nationalist Party and the Labour Party) have alternated in government. On 1 May 2004, Malta joined the EU. The House of Representatives is normally made up of 65 members elected for 5 years under the first-past-the-post system (the number of members can be increased in order to give the winning party a majority) and elects the President of the Republic.
