Geography.
Liberia is bordered by Guinea to the north, by Côte d’Ivoire to the east and by Sierra Leone to the west. To the south it faces out onto the Atlantic Ocean.
The country has a flat and level coastal strip, particularly in the north-west, as well as many lagoons. The land rises inland up to a height of 1752 m in the Nimba mountain range on the borders with Guinea and Côte d’Ivoire. Inland, the terrain is a series of tablelands cut by numerous rivers.
The climate is equatorial, hot and humid.

Government

Founded in 1822 by the American Colonization Society, a humanitarian organisation that supported the liberation of African American slaves and their resettlement in Africa, Liberia became independent on 26 July 1847 and adopted a constitution along American lines. A military coup brought Samuel Doe to power and from 1989 he faced armed opposition from Charles Taylor. A 1996 ceasefire and the intervention of international forces saw elections held in 1997 which Taylor won, imposing an authoritarian and corrupt regime as well as intervening in the civil war in nearby Sierra Leone. In 2003, an offensive from the LURD rebels (Liberians United for Reconciliation and Democracy), forced Taylor to seek refuge in Nigeria. He was arrested in 2006 and sentenced in 2012 to fifty years in prison by the Special Court for Sierra Leone. With the Accra peace agreements (18 August 2003) a transitional government was formed and a UN peacekeeping contingent (UNMIL) was installed, which remained until 2018.
According to the Constitution of 6 January 1986, the President of the Republic, who is also head of the government, is elected by direct suffrage for a six-year term. Parliament is made up of two chambers: the House of Representative has 73 members elected for six-year terms, the Senate has 30 members elected for nine-year terms.

Economy

In 2019-20, the country experienced a recession due to the contraction of services and agricultural production, aggravated by the COVID-19 pandemic. The depreciation of the Liberian dollar led to a rise in inflation. International aid is still essential. The predominant commercial crops are rubber, cocoa, oil palm and coffee. In addition to mines rich with diamonds (Lofa river), recent offshore prospecting has revealed considerable oil reserves. There are also deposits of gold (in Tchien) and iron ore (in Mount Gangra). A cement plant and a refinery operate in Monrovia, and a rubber plant in Harbel. The Mount Coffee hydroelectric plant is active again. China established special commercial conditions with Liberia.
