Geography.
Kyrgyzstan is bordered by Kazakhstan to the north, China to the east and south-east, Tajikistan to the south-west, and Uzbekistan to the west. It comprises most of the Tien Shan mountain range and the Alatau Mountains, and is crossed by the Chüy, Naryn and Talas rivers. The largest lake is Ysyk-Köl. It has a continental climate.

Government

Formerly a federal republic of the USSR, Kyrgyzstan proclaimed independence on 31 August 1991. In 2005, a popular revolt ousted the President Askar Akayev, who had been in office since 1990. He was replaced by Kurmanbek Bakiyev until April 2010, when widespread demonstrations forced him to flee the country.
According to the 2010 Constitution, amended in 2016, Kyrgyzstan is a parliamentary republic. The President of the Republic is elected by direct suffrage for a single six-year term and appoints the Prime Minister who must be approved by parliament. The parliamentary assembly, known as the Jogorku Kenesh, has 120 members elected for five years.

Agriculture

Primary sector.
The principal agricultural crops for export are beans and cotton; other important crops are cereals (wheat and maize), potatoes, sugar beet, fruit (watermelons and apples), tomatoes and grape-vines (especially in the Fergana Valley and Chüy Valley).
Sheep-farming is very important, due to the sheer abundance of grazing land. Yak and the small Kyrgyz breed of horse are also farmed extensively.

Minerals

Secondary and tertiary sector.
The main mineral resource is gold (Kumtor and Makmal). There are mines for antimony (Khaydarkan and Batken’s province), mercury (Khaydarkan and Novoye) and uranium (Chüy’s province).
There are significant reserves of coal and lignite (Almalyk, Jyrgalang, Kara-Kiche-Kök-Janggak, Kyzyl-Kyya, Sülüktü, and Tash-Kömür), but limited reserves of oil (the north-eastern edge of the Fergana Basin) and natural gas (Mayluu-Suu, Togap-Beshkent).
Electrical energy production is highly developed and comes from power plants on the River Naryn and smaller power plants elsewhere.
Industry tends to be concentrated in the Chüy Valley and the Fergana Valley. The metal-working sector, located especially around Osh, is quite important. Near the capital there are chemical, mechanical, cement and electrical-goods factories and textile companies.
The balance of trade is negative. The country exports electrical energy, food products, textiles and raw mineral products.
The most important imports are cereals, industrial products and fuel. Remittances from emigrants are extremely significant. Kyrgyzstan’s main trading partners are Switzerland, China, Russia and Kazakhstan.
