Politics and current affairs

The election to the presidency of Jovenel Moïse (20 November 2016), close to ex-president Martelly, put an end to the political crisis that followed Martelly’s resignation (7 February 2016) and the annulment of the 25 October 2015 elections due to vote rigging. On 4 October 2016, Hurricane Matthew hit the south-western part of the country, resulting in hundreds of victims.

Geography.
Haiti lies on the western part of the island of Hispaniola in the Caribbean Sea and is bordered to the east by the Dominican Republic. The country is mountainous and is formed by two mountain ranges (Morne La Selle, 2674 m) with a small chain between them. The coastline is rugged, high and rocky. The climate is hot and humid, tempered by the altitude.

Government

Formerly a French colony, Haiti was the first country in Latin America to gain independence in 1804.
The USA occupied the island militarily from 1915 to 1934, also maintaining control following the Second World War. In 1957, the ferocious dictatorship of the Duvalier family began. It was toppled by popular revolt in 1986. In 1987, a new Constitution was approved, setting up a presidential republic. The first free elections in 1990 elected Jean-Bertrand Aristide to the presidency, but in 1991 the President was forced into exile by a military coup d’état. The democratic process began again in 1994 following US military intervention on a UN mandate which brought Aristide back to power. He was re-elected as President of the country in the elections of 2000. In 2004, a new revolt, led by the Democratic Convergence opposition, was quashed by US and French mediation and by the intervention of a UN stabilization mission (MINUSTAH), which officially ended in October 2017. On 12 January, 2010, the country was struck by a violent earthquake, which killed 300 000 people and wreaked serious damage.
The President of the Republic, who is also head of the government, is elected with a mandate of five years. Legislative power is in the hands of a two-chamber parliament (the Chamber of Deputies with 119 members elected for four years, and the Senate with 30 members elected for six years, one-third of whom are renewed every two years).

Economy

Haiti is the poorest country in the region and depends on international aid. The remittances received from emigrants are significant.
Agriculture is severely hindered by the poor soil, by frequent hurricanes and by the lack of farm machinery and irrigation systems. In the more fertile areas, produce destined for export is grown (especially coffee, cocoa and fruit). There are textile factories (at Port-au-Prince, Caracol, Les Cayes and Léogane), sugar refineries (at Port-au-Prince, Jérémie, Léogane and Les Cayes), distilleries, tobacco factories, chemical plants and cement factories.
