Guyana is bordered to the east by Suriname, to the south and the south-west by Brazil and to the north-west by Venezuela; it lies on the Atlantic Ocean to the north-east. Mainly made up of plains, in the western (Mount Roraima, 2875 m) and southern (Serra Acaraí) areas it is mountainous and forested.
The climate is hot and humid.

Government

An area of Dutch settlement from the sixteenth century and a British colony since 1831, Guyana gained independence, remaining within the Commonwealth, on 26 May 1966. On 23 February 1970 a “Co-operative Republic” was proclaimed, choosing to follow a socialist model of government. This model was modified by the enactment of the Constitution of 6 October 1980 and by the first freely-held elections of 1992, which allowed alternation between the two major groups, the Liberal Party (representing the Indian community) and the National Congress (supported by the black minority). The President of the Republic, who enjoys executive powers, is the head of the party that receives the most number of votes in the elections for the National Assembly (65 elected members with a mandate of 5 years), which exercises legislative powers.
There are territorial disputes with Venezuela which lays claim to part of the region of Upper Essequibo, assigned to Guyana by arbitration in 1899, and with Suriname which lays claim to the areas on the south-eastern border.

Economy

The economy is based on the export of agricultural and mineral products but principally depends on foreign capital. Economic activity is hindered by inadequate infrastructure. Rice, sugar cane, coconut palms, tomatoes, bananas and other tropical fruits are grown.
Different types of wood are important products: Mora excels, Carapa guianensis, Eperua falcata and Ocotea rodiei.
The fishing of shellfish is also important. The main mineral resource is bauxite (at Kwakwani, Ituni and Linden). Gold (the alluvial deposits of the Potaro, Mazaruni, Cuyuni and Rapununi) and diamonds (the valley of the Mazaruni) are also extracted. The exploitation of offshore oil fields begun in 2019.
The food industry is also present with sugar, beer (at Georgetown) and rum factories. Exports are made up above all of sugar, gold and bauxite; fuel and machinery are imported. The main commercial partners are the USA and Trinidad and Tobago.
