Government

This former Spanish colony has been independent since 12 October 1968. In 1979 Col. T. Obiang Nguema Mbasogo took power with a military coup d’état, keeping control of the country even after multipartyism was introduced with the 1991 Constitution. The Democratic Party (PDGE), which represents the Fang tribe, has won all elections and maintains a solid majority in parliament. The President is elected by direct suffrage for seven years and appoints the Prime Minister. Since 2013, the Chamber of Deputies (100 members elected for a five-year term) is flanked by a Senate of 70 members (55 elected for five years and 15 appointed by the President).

Economy

The exploitation of natural gas (Alba) and oil (Ceiba, Zafiro) deposits is the main source of revenue; despite attempts to diversify the economy, the country remains susceptible to the trend in hydrocarbon prices.
Subsistence agriculture (based on sweet potatoes, cassava and bananas) is widespread; cocoa and valuable timber resources (rosewood, ebony and okoumé) are exported; fishing is important. Industry is limited to the processing of hydrocarbons (gas liquefaction plant at Malabo) and agricultural products (palm oil and beverages). The CFA franc is pegged to the Euro at a fixed rate of exchange.
