Politics and current affairs

The presidential elections on 31 October 2020 confirmed A. Ouattara, who stood for a third term after the death of the government party candidate, Prime Minister Coulibaly. The decision sparked violent protests and caused the opposition parties to boycott the vote.

Geography.
The Republic of Côte d’Ivoire (the Ivory Coast) is bordered by Mali and Burkina Faso to the north, by Ghana to the east, and by Liberia and Guinea to the west. To the south, it faces out onto the Atlantic Ocean. The coastal strip is low and even, while further inland a savannah plateau rises westward to a height of 1752 m (the Nimba range). The inland regions are crossed from north to south by numerous rivers, the main ones being the River Komoé, the River Bandama and the River Sassandra. The climate is hot and humid with plentiful rainfall on the coast, but less inland.

Government

Formerly a French colony, Côte d’Ivoire has been independent since 7 August 1960. For 30 years, the Democratic Party (PDCI) was the sole political party, and it was only in 1990 that a multi-party system was introduced.
In 2002, militants in the north-west of the country rebelled, taking control of the centre and north of the country, and a civil war followed, which also involved rebel fighters from both Liberia and Sierra Leone. The Agreement of Marcoussis (Paris) on 24 January 2003 brought about the formation of a government of national reconciliation which was, however, unable to assert its authority.
A UN peace mission has been present in the country since 2003 alongside a French military contingent. In 2007, as part of the peace process being overseen by the African Union and the United Nations, President Laurent Gbagbo appointed Guillame Soro, leader of the New Force (FN) rebels, as Prime Minister. Following his appointment, the buffer zone between the government controlled south and the rebel controlled north was suspended.
In 2010, following the presidential elections won by Alassane Ouattara, the country plunged into a serious internal crisis, which degenerated into five months of civil war. In April 2011 the militia in favour of Ouattara conquered the capital and took Gbagbo prisoner, who was extradited to The Hague to face trial before the International Criminal Court.
According to the 2016 Constitution, the President of the Republic, who holds executive powers, is elected by direct suffrage for a five-year term and can be re-elected only once. Parliament comprises the National Assembly (255 members elected by direct vote) and the Senate (99 members, a third of which are elected by local institutions and two-thirds appointed by the President); the limit on the term of the houses is temporarily fixed to 2020, after which it will last 5 years.

Agriculture

Primary sector.
The economy is heavily dependent on exports of cocoa, as the country is the largest producer in the world. Cashew nuts, oil palm, bananas, coffee, cotton and pineapple are other important crops. Yams, cassavas, rice and maize are produced for local consumption. The forests supply wood for cabinet making, particularly mahogany and there are rubber plantations around Dabou. Fishing is an important activity but is carried out mainly by foreign fishing fleets; Abidjan is the main African fishing port for tuna.
