Geography.
The Cabo Verde archipelago is made up of 10 main islands and several minor ones in the Atlantic Ocean, off the coast of Senegal. The main islands are Santiago (991 km²), Santo Antão (779 km²), Boa Vista (620 km²), Fogo (476 km²) and São Nicolau (388 km²). All islands are of volcanic origin, the highest peak being in Fogo (2829 m).

Government

It has been independent from Portugal since 5 July 1975 and was politically united with Guinea-Bissau until 14 November 1980. From the outset, political power was assumed by the African Party for the Independence of Cabo Verde (PAICV) and was maintained until 17 February 1990.
Since then, the country has been governed alternately by the PAICV and the Movement for Democracy (MpD), which won the last election (18 April 2021).
Based on the 1992 Constitution, the President of the Republic and the National Assembly (comprising 72 members) are elected by direct suffrage for a five-year term.

Economy

Scarce natural resources make development difficult. Poverty is declining, but together with an increasing population it continues to fuel a significant emigration. Agriculture is rather limited and the country is forced to import more than three quarters of its food requirements. Mining and manufacturing are fairly insignificant. The main sector is tourism; fishing has a potential for growth (tuna and crustaceans). Money sent by emigrants combined with international aid allows the country to finance its sizeable trade deficit. The Cabo Verde escudo is pegged to the Euro at a fixed exchange rate.
