Politics and current affairs

Prime Minister Dean Barrow (UDP), in office since 2008, resigned after his party’s defeat in the November 2020 elections.

Geography.
Belize is bordered to the north by Mexico, to the south and west by Guatemala, and lies on the Caribbean Sea to the east. Situated on a stretch of coast that is part of the Yucatan Peninsula, Belize also has a series of mostly coral islands in its coastal waters. The inland area is flat to the north and mountainous to the south (Doyle’s Delight, 1124 m). In 2019, a referendum approved the decision for an international arbitration to resolve a territory dispute with Guatemala.

Government

Previously known as British Honduras (until 1973), Belize became independent on 21 September 1981 and stayed within the Commonwealth. Guatemala only recognized its independence in 1991, without, however, dropping its claims over an area of 12 000 km2. The border between the two countries is marked by a 2 km “border strip”. The Head of State is the British Sovereign, represented by a Governor General who appoints the Prime Minister and the 13-member Senate; the House of Representatives is made up of 31 members elected by direct suffrage for 5 years.

Economy

Growth is susceptible to the fickle trend of tourism (the most important economic sector), oil exports and revenues, as well as the effects of natural disasters. Among the plantation crops, which provide a large share of exports, sugar cane predominates, followed by banana and citrus fruit. The fishing segment (crustaceans and molluscs) is sizeable, too. Cedar, mahogany, pine and rosewood are among the most important timber products. Oil extraction is relevant. The secondary sector includes the textile industry, factories for the conservation of citrus fruits and sugar production, tannic acid, beer and cigarettes.
